goui for the Mac
The same EQ as the extension, for every sound your Mac plays. goui lives in the menu bar and opens the panel you know from the browser: Listen, Tune and Library, AutoEQ for your headphone and EQByEar for your ear.
Install it with one line in Terminal. It needs no admin password. It asks before it installs.
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wyndhamharyata/goui/main/mac/install.sh | sh
Before you install
- goui needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 26 or newer.
- goui changes every sound the Mac plays. It follows the Mac's default output. One EQ covers every app. Another system EQ, such as eqMac or SoundSource, stacks its curve on goui's. Run one at a time.
- Spatial Audio and head tracking on AirPods and Beats drop out while goui plays, as the troubleshooting below explains.
- macOS asks to let goui record the audio of this Mac. goui changes the sound on its way to you and keeps none of it.
-
goui is not signed by Apple yet. An update of the engine asks for that permission again.
Your settings stay in
~/Library/Application Support/gouithrough updates.
Get started
- Turn goui on. Click goui in the menu bar, then press the power button at the top of the panel.
- Allow the audio. The first time, macOS asks to let goui record the audio of this Mac. Press Allow. goui changes the sound on its way to you and keeps none of it.
- Play something. Any app works. Music, a video, a call.
From there the panel works as it does in the browser. The try-it panel on the homepage shows each part.
The menu bar item
- Click opens and closes the panel.
- Right-click opens the menu.
- About goui shows the version of goui.
- Wide panel widens the panel, with Listen, Tune and Library side by side. You can also drag the panel's edge.
- Restart engine builds the audio path again. The sound plays a moment without the EQ.
- Reload panel loads the panel again. The sound carries on.
- Sets lists the Sets you saved in the panel and ticks the one that plays. A pick plays it with the panel closed. The submenu shows once you have saved a Set.
- Check for Updates… asks GitHub for the newest release.
- Update to … shows when a release changes the engine. One click installs it and starts goui again.
- Automatic updates keeps the check on, twice a day.
- Quit goui stops it until the next login. The Mac then plays the normal way.
goui keeps itself up to date. A release that changes only the panel goes in by itself. The panel loads again. A release that changes the engine waits for Update to …. macOS asks again to record the audio. goui asks GitHub for the newest version. It sends nothing about you.
goui starts at login and comes back on its own after a crash. If the sound stops, it builds the audio path again by itself.
From Terminal
The installer puts a goui command in Terminal.
goui set "name"plays one of your Sets, as a pick from the Sets menu does.goui start, goui stopandgoui restartrun the app.goui logsshows the log as it grows.goui rollbackgoes back to the app before the last update.-
goui uninstallremoves the app. Your settings stay in~/Library/Application Support/goui.
Measure your ear
Measure my ear with EQByEar opens eqbyear.com in your browser. It turns My ear off, so the test hears your headphone with only its AutoEQ profile. goui already hears the browser, so run the test right away. Copy the result. Press Paste in the My ear tab, paste the result in the box, then press Apply and Save.
Troubleshooting
AirPods and Beats sound flat or lose head tracking.
goui is not made for Spatial Audio or head tracking. macOS applies them only when an app plays straight to AirPods or Beats. goui plays in between, so the effect drops out or can sound wrong. Turn off Spatial Audio for the headphone in Control Center, or quit goui while you use it.
No sound, or the sound plays without the EQ.
Check that goui is allowed in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Screen & System Audio Recording. Then choose Restart engine in the menu.
Privacy
goui reads the audio your Mac plays, runs it through the EQ on your Mac and plays it back. It
never records it, keeps it or sends it anywhere. Your settings, presets and Sets stay in
~/Library/Application Support/goui. AutoEQ downloads work as they do in the
extension, as the privacy policy describes. Twice a day goui asks
GitHub for the newest release. That request carries nothing about you.
